Emi Wood Scully

Artist Statement

Emi Wood Scully approaches her canvas without any preconceived planning. She is drawn towards landscapes that are inconclusive and enigmatic. Oftentimes her art may appear unfinished, but this only adds to her interest in ever evolving scenes or moments of the day—buds which bloom into flowers overnight, ephemeral shards of sunlight, abandoned barns which house weeds and suppressed memories, and her main subject: roads that rest on the dichotomy of ceaselessness and closure. Her main medium is acrylic although she loves the freedom that oils provide. Scully also enjoys mixing charcoal, pastel, and watercolor in order to create loose and liberating mixed media pieces. She has been painting since she was a child and all along she has always aimed to abandon her consciousness, laying down loose brushstrokes, with hopes that her viewer will experience a similar gratitude for transient scenes that often get overlooked.
